A few months back, a friend of mine lent me the first season of Stargate: SG-1. In that time, I have watched three episodes, the last of which was so fail-y I actually cried (while yelling at the screen). Imperialism and inaccuracy, hooray. -_-

So, my question: do I try to watch the rest, deconstructing as I go? Do I pop my friend's bubble of enjoyment by saying "this has too much fail, I can't stand it"? Or do I semi-lie and say I just don't have enough time to watch the rest of it?

The first one is probably a worthwhile pursuit, but I'm not sure I'm up to it. Thoughts?

Fair warning: it's only going to get worse overall.

It stays pretty faily but there are some enjoyable-ish episodes. I got my SG1 fan partner to help me compile a list of episodes to watch, here's my thoughts on them.

Or you could watch something that's actually good :)

I'd be the person who pops the bubble - my friends don't feel shy about telling me which of my obsessions does nothing for them, so I don't feel the need to hold back myself, either. Life's too short for bad fic/tv/etc...

I think based off the fact that you need to ask; I'd just go with a simple "Sorry, not my thing, I didn't enjoy it" expanding with "I'm a bit of a history buff so the perspective on history it represents here hurts my brain, and I don't think it's going to change and I don't have the time to spare on something I don't enjoy."

I wouldn't go too much into detail as to why you didn't like it, unless they seemed interested and asked why.

I don't think you should mask the fact that you didn't like it and I think it could be potentially problematic if you mislead her about the time matter, but I think if you make a big deal about the criticism of the show, then she might take it as criticism of herself.

Although I used to like star gate - I don't think star gate is worth your time when there are many other shows that you can watch and would likely get more out of.

I wouldn't recommend semi-lying about why you don't feel like watching the show. It hurts to have your pain diminished, perhaps especially when you're doing it to yourself.

If you have reason to believe your friend would make your reaction to the show's fail all about themself, it might be wise to spare yourself and avoid the strain on your friendship by not bringing the show up, and not answering if they ask, beyond saying it wasn't your taste.

SG-1 isn't a very good show. Watching the best episodes, like alias_sqbr suggests, might be worth it if you already care for one or more of the characters because of fanfic, or if it's very important to be able to participate in fannish conversations with your friends.
