esmenet: three-frame .gif of Shin and Yankumi. Shin is in a fundoshi, and Yankumi is staring at him. (shinkumi)
Fell off the posting wagon, oops. I'll do days 13 and 14 later, but today, from [personal profile] skygiants I present: the unwritten Utena crossover I would most like to see!

You did this to me on purpose, didn't you. I can tell.

There's a lot of Utena crossovers that would be really great; I've always wanted to see a Ranma 1/2 crossover where Kodachi and Nanami meet. And there's all kinds of interesting stuff you could do with the Utena movie and things that are either in a totally different genre but similar visually or things that are technically in a similar genre but visually completely different. Even—maybe especially—in a written medium. So stuff like Sailor Moon/Utena would be pretty cool. Actually, the idea of 'student from thing x transfers to Ohtori Academy' is pretty winning all by itself.

But AS I'M SURE YOU, BECCA, ALREADY KNOW my favorite unwritten Utena crossover is the Gokusen one I promised to write you and then never finished because i was in a bad place emotionally to be writing humor at the time.* (It is still in the works, though! How could I not write such gems as 'Shin, grown-up law student, is constantly mistaken for a middle schooler' and 'Yankumi makes up elaborate plan that involves kicking Akio in the face'. How could I deprive myself of that.)

I just adore the idea of Yankumi putting together one of her complicated undercover disguise plans to root out bad stuff going on in a school, and the idea of her going after somebody like Akio is really satisfying. The idea of her vs. Akio specifically is GREAT, because if Akio is vulnerable to anything it is a) really sincere people who can't be seduced or distracted and b) physical attack.

There's also the aspect of Yankumi and Shin as a grown-up team running their own operations, where Shin is either in or just out of law school. They're on their own, without backup, in a very dangerous place—but because of their personalities and history, you'd never have to be too afraid for them. Yankumi is kind of uniquely placed to be able to deal with or avoid the particular pitfalls of Ohtori Gakuen, and while Shin is less so I do feel like the things that would be aimed at him are things he could deal with.

Except for being mistaken for a middle schooler when he's a graduate student disguised as a high schooler. he is not equipped for that.

*I still feel like I'm not quite ready to sit down and write it yet. It's hard for me to be whole-heartedly, genuinely funny—I find that weird dadaist humor that's popular on Tumblr right now to be much easier.

December meme post is here.
esmenet: a rainbow rose (rainbow rose)
From [personal profile] alexseanchai: what I love about Sailor Moon.

This is easy!

Full cast of ladies. You know how in a lot of stories it is literally a man's world, with maybe two or three girls—and this happens even in things where a girl is the main character? Sailor Moon is ALL GIRLS ALL THE TIME. Not just Usagi and the other senshi—most of their villains and even most of the minor bit-part characters are ladies. It is just so unbelievably refreshing to see something that's just as all-ladies-always as the stuff I write myself.

Queer characters. It's been twenty years and you still can't find stuff as queer as this manga. Bisexual characters, lesbians, canonical genderqueer character, at least one asexual character. Reading Sailor Moon is absolutely living the representational dream, for me.

Tsukino Usagi, lazy crybaby bisexual dream girl.

Chiba Mamoru, Usagi's #1 partner, best dude, badly-dressed professional kidnappee.

Tenou Haruka, juggling sailor senshi duties with being Michiru's full-time girlfriend AND Japan's most famous racecar driver. Queerest of queers.

Aino Minako, love-and-beauty pop-star team leader, who always falls in love but will never, ever let romance come between her and her duty.

Setsuna and Michiru and Haruka all shacking up together to raise baby Hotaru.

Takeuchi Naoko's drawing style, which is a bit limited in some ways—Usagi's supposed to be chubby, but you can't tell at all—while also being one of my favorite things ever. It conveys emotion really, really well, and it's cute and funny and beautiful. So many little details.

That one time evil!Mamoru brainwashed Motoki into thinking he was his best friend because evil!Mamoru needed information, and they've been friends ever since.

Neo Queen Serenity: you can FEEL how kind and loving and strong she is, and you can tell at once that Usagi will grow to be that person, not too far in the future.

How destiny is intermingled with choice; Ace might have told Minako that it was her fate to never have love, only her duty, but the truth is this: Minako decided to hold her duty to the princess above all things. She decides every day. For all of the sailor senshi, their destiny isn't something forced upon them; it's the end result of their own choices. Given the chance, not a single one of them would turn away.

Still a lot of open spots in the meme, give me more things to talk about please!
esmenet: the castle in the sky where eternity dwells (Utena) (the castle in the sky where eternity dwe)
I am getting worse and worse at commenting, but much better about posting! Moving right along, here's day 5: current fandom I wish everyone would be into.

Now, [personal profile] dhampyresa asked for current fandom, which means I have fewer decisions to make. I always want people to be into Utena, or Gokusen, or Ranma 1/2, but those are constants. By 'into', here, I'm going to assume 'producing fannish things' rather than just 'liking'.

Taking all this into account, it's actually a really easy choice.

Eek, I have already fallen behind on my (already postponed) December memeage! Lately all I've been doing is hiding in my room & knitting, idk.

Monday's topic, from [profile] maat_seshat: reading in Chinese/Japanese & habits/opinions thereof!

My Chinese and Japanese are not actually that good -- I read somewhere that once you get to a certain point in language learning, you no longer have a language learning problem -- you have an adult literacy problem. And I think that's true, because I keep picking up novels in Chinese or Japanese and reading them for a bit and then going '...this is too hard' & going off to do something else, even though I know just pushing through and reading as much as possible is the one thing I can rely on to help me improve.

For Japanese novels (as opposed to manga) the one thing I can read with decent success is Murakami, because he favors short sentences and doesn't use that many difficult words, unlike most of the novels I really want to read (e.g. Twelve Kingdoms).

I actually find Chinese novels a bit easier to read, because Chinese sentences require you to hold fewer things in your head at once, so it doesn't matter as much if I miss a few words. Chinese YA novels can be HARD, though, because they do use a lot of difficult words & slang. On the other hand, they have titles like 'The Interdimensional Music Maniac Union', which make everything worth it. (And I will admit that a lot of them put the hard vocab up front, b/c they're explaining the backstory, which is cool but also a big hurdle to jump at the beginning of a novel.)

I will say that reading both comics and novels in Japanese & Chinese has made me much less sympathetic towards translators. It would be very easy to do a better job than most of them are doing! (Even professional translators -- just look at the huge botch job TokyoPop made of the Twelve Kingdoms novels.) However, it's also given me plenty of respect for Chinese translators of foreign works: I've found the Chinese version of Invisible Cities just as beautifully incomprehensible as I would expect, and Howl's Moving Castle is so far matching just the flavor I remember from the original.

(Sidenote: subway bookstores in Shanghai are AMAZING, particularly if you're feeling like some foreign philosophy/politics/literature in translation. Lots of good stuff; the one at Line One's South Shaanxi stop has a whole shelf of Italo Calvino, a bunch of Banana Yoshimoto, and I picked up a copy of Edward Said's Orienalism as well. I found it much better furnished than the nearby English-language bookstore, though of course everything was in Chinese.)

All of which is to say that I don't think I've been reading widely enough in either Japanese or Chinese to really develop different habits than in English, except for getting intermittent rage at bad translators when I'm reading something unrelated, and I'm really curious to see what habits I do develop.

--And that I should have bought more books when I had the chance, goddammit.

Request fic, meta, recommendations (of fic, books, music, recipes, blogs, knitting patterns, whatever), answers to memes, readings of fic/poetry/etc (recorded w/ either my computer or phone microphone, whoops), short translations of Chinese/Japanese into English, photographs of handwritten stuff -- whatever you'd like. I haven't been around much lately, and I want to do something nice for my friends.

List of fandoms atm: Ranma 1/2, Harry Potter, Utena (anime or movie), A:TLA, Leverage (though I'm not confident in my ability to write fic for it), xxxHOLiC, Gokusen, Samurai Champloo, Detective Conan/Magic Kaito (though I'm not caught up and anyway it's been a while), Creamy Mami, Welcome to Night Vale, Fullmetal Alchemist (manga only), The Middleman, Oresama Teacher. --oh, and any fic I've mentioned writing but have not finished is also fair game for the asking.

Requests are unlimited, though I don't promise to fill them all.
esmenet: Jin, with the caption "I AM SMART" (I AM SMART)
Due to the fact that I'm (still) living in Shanghai, I usually don't get to see everyone's Wednesday reading posts until Thursday or sometimes Friday, so that + me watching as much or more than I'm reading, I've been thinking of doing Media Consumption Friday instead. But today I read a thing, so I'm gonna follow everyone else for now.

What I'm currently reading:
Murakami Haruki's 羊をめくる冒険 (Wild Sheep Chase is the English title, I believe). It's slow going, because my Japanese was never that amazing to begin with and I've forgotten a lot while I've been focusing on Chinese this year, but it's still easier to read than any of the (supposedly young-adult) chinese novels I've been attempting. I think it's just as I suspected; my familiarity with grammar in Japanese makes up for my lack of vocabulary, at least in this particular writing style, while Chinese's grammatical similarities with English are actually a giant pain in the ass because, being a native english speaker, I have no idea how the fuck english actually works. Not far enough into the novel to have a real opinion on it yet.

Recently finished reading:
All the translated chapters of the Legend of the Sun Knight series, which culminated in me actually buying all the novels in Chinese, though my low level of Chinese fluency has made them really slow going. Also I did the thing where I tripped and fell into White Dudes Fandoms, though I must say the Supernatural/X-Men crossover was pretty great for its genre.

(The only good thing about falling into White Dude Fandoms -- not kidding, I really do fall into them, I have never watched an episode of Supernatural or the Sentinal or almost any of those shows in my life and I do not intend to -- is that I eventually get so fed up with them that I storm off in a fury to either write anti-establishment femslash or study, thus making myself a slightly less worse person.)

Reading next: more Shingeki no Kyojin, more japanese novels, re-reading more of 07-Ghost, and more boring-ass white dude slash to make myself angry enough to write some proper femslash and maybe study for finals.

From [personal profile] terajk, [personal profile] littlebutfierce, and pretty much everyone else:

I was thinking you should tell me about stories you think I should write. I mean, if you could sit me down for a day or whatever and say, "I want you to write this story for me," what would that story be? I'm not actually promising to *write* any of these, mind you, but it's fun anyway. And who knows if I'll be inspired!
esmenet: A slightly battered white wooden sign on a brick wall, reading "NO SEX PLEASE" (no sex please)
So, I haven't been around much lately! This is because school has started and I have no energy. You know what gives me energy? WRITING MEMES.

Snagged from [personal profile] newredshoes: Give me an AU (or crossover!) prompt in the comments and I will plot out for you the fic it evokes in my mind.

Applicable fandoms: Utena, Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Creamy Mami, xxxHOLiC, Fullmetal Alchemist, Natsume Yuujinchou, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Princess Tutu, Detective Conan/Magic Kaito, Loveless, and anything else you know I'm familiar with!
esmenet: Kanae standing at a window (kanae)
So I think I wrote a lot less than last year, but more fic & ideas for/of fic actually happened? Which is to say, I am very unsatisfied with myself all around, but I actually made some stuff.

Leitmotif(s) of the year: Freedom, escape (as usual); relationships that may or may not be romance, no one is quite sure; poetry; meta-fiction; and "Well, what do we do now?"

Favorite(s) of the batch: history of the rose, because even though I don't think it's particularly well-written, it's a bunch of things I love all squished together.

Best of the batch: streets and skies and open doors is the only thing I wrote this year where I feel like I really got everything just (almost) the way I wanted it. Writing is a giant pain sometimes, because I keep wanting everything to be a great big spiral of perfect, but honestly if I can get the phrasing and imagery right then the rest doesn't matter that much.

Most underappreciated by the universe: ars poetica, first fic in which I publicly mentioned Tracey Davies and poetry in the same sentence. I feel like I got more of the imagery right here than in the actual poems I wrote for her, mostly because actual poetry is a fucking pain in the ass.

Favorite first lines: My actual favorite first line is Their lives are made of ink and paper, which was going to be in history of the rose until that turned into a completely different fic. My favorite posted line is Latin leaves me like an ex-boyfriend, from wizard-born.

Most fun to write: no such thing as silence was super fun, because it is one of those short crunchy character-sketch fics, self-introspection cheap at twice the price. And I learned that I really do love Taki quite a lot.

Sexiest fic: (not gonna write you a) love song, which I have barely even started on, because I'm still hashing out all the characters in my head. I'm not even sure it's going to have romance in it, let alone sex, but it is still the sexiest thing I have written all year, because it involves a lot of girls staring at each others' hands or hair or mouths. This untitled Chrome fic is probably a lot closer to the traditional definition of sexy, but it's actually asexy so it doesn't count.

"Holy crap, that's wrong even for you" fic: That Hermione-goes-to-Ohtori fic. It is self-indulgent crossover meta-tastic idfic at its finest, and at some point I will finish it and post the damn thing.

Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: (not gonna write you a) love song, absolutely. The reason none of it is done is that I'm spending lots and lots of time thinking about Pansy and Parvati and Tracey and Ginny and Hermione, and I still haven't gotten their basic characteristics all worked out in my head yet. But it's going to be fantastic.

New pairing/genre/fandom you never predicted writing in January: I certainly didn't think I was even going to consider writing Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami fic! And yet it is happening.

Hardest fic to write: ALL THE ONES I HAVEN'T FINISHED YET. Everything I have finished was easy, otherwise I couldn't have done it. These current ones, now, these ones are hard.

Biggest disappointment: ME. More particularly, the fact that I haven't written those help_pakistan and help_japan fics yet. They're on the work table, I swear! It's just going slow.

Biggest surprise: The amount of fics I actually did manage to write this year, even if they're tiny.

Most telling fic: silence speaks louder than words, I think. The way Taki relates to the world is not the way I relate to the world, but the way she reacts to great pressure is the way I hope I would.

What's next? Finishing some of the things I've started. Starting some of the things I've talked about. DEFINITELY NO THOR FIC. I refuse!
esmenet: Toph in a mud bath, earthbending the mud on her face. Larger text reads "I feel pretty", smaller text "oh so pretty" (oh so pretty)

esmenet: The Shadow Girls from Revolutionary Girl Utena putting on a play (shadow girls: the play)
[personal profile] thingswithwings and [personal profile] terajk asked me about these icons! So here I am talking about them.

A-ko and B-ko from Utena! There are so many things I love about that show that it's ridiculous to call any one of them a favourite, but the Shadow Girls would certainly be one. They're so deliciously meta, with their Greek Chorus plays about the duels. And their fabulous hairstyles don't hurt either. ;) Most of my standard 'talking and listening' icons are of them, because that's pretty much all they do, and they do it with style. (UFO style.) This one is by (I think) [livejournal.com profile] sorceresses, as are at least half of all my Utena icons. You should go have a look, if you decide you need some yourself. ;)

This is probably (and sadly) the Azula icon I have that gets the least use, because it's not brightly colored. >D However, I think it's the first one of her I ever had, and I do still like it. It looks like she's about to firebend at my face! I almost wish I'd taken the Mai one right next to it instead, though. Because I still don't have any icons of just Mai.

This is the first Samurai Champloo icon I ever used! I love how bright Mugen's clothes look, because I'm pretty sure it was never anything like that hue in the show. And how all three of them look like the cameraman told them "Okay, look badass!" about three seconds before the shutter clicked.

I think, at the time, I went looking for good Samurai Champloo icons specifically so I could use one of them when I talked about the terrible, terrible plotbunny I had at the time for a Samurai Champloo/My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic crossover. I still kind of have that plotbunny, actually.

This has become my standard 'asexuality' icon. I don't know, there's just something about a wooden sign on a brick wall saying "NO SEX PLEASE". :D

Even though it doesn't look like it, this is actually another Samurai Champloo icon! I don't remember when these appear in the show, but it might have been while Mugen was underwater. I really like the pinkish-red colors, even though I can never quite remember what this kind of flower is called. I do know it's the one flower, out of all my icons with flowers in them, that isn't a rose.

And now on to [personal profile] terajk's!

This is Chrome Dokuro! She a teenage girl who walks around missing a bunch of her internal organs, and is way cooler than you. In addition, her substitute internal organs are made out of FIRE. (Mist fire. She's just that cool, okay.) I've never figured out—or possibly just don't remember—if she's actually missing that eye, if it looks like Mukuro's, or if she just wears the patch for dramatic effect.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn! is, sadly, not the greatest with regards to ladies, so Chrome doesn't get to be the hero very often. However, this may not exactly be an unbiased opinion, because she is my favorite character in the whole manga, and possibly my favorite character in Shounen Jump manga period. <3

This icon encapsulates a major, major reason why I love Gokusen—actually, a lot of my favorite things—so much. On the right we have the math teacher Yamaguchi Kumiko, who genuinely cares about her delinquent students and wants to interest them in her subject. She also enjoys hanging out with her family—who just happen to be the most powerful yakuza group in town—stacking the bruised and groaning bodies of her opponents in large heaps, and helping people. With violence.

Meanwhile, on the left, we have Sawada Shin, her cool good-looking delinquent student and (eventually) unofficial lieutenant. He takes care of all the manly man stuff, like getting kidnapped.

. . . As I'm sure you can tell, THIS IS A REALLY GREAT MANGA. And [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe's post on it is pretty fantastic too.

Excuse me, I need to go read it again. (I actually brought the first volume with me to school today for Japanese practice. Oops?)

This is kind of my default Azula icon. And my default 'lady character looking cool' icon. It was also my actual default Dreamwidth icon for a while, but then I decided I should maybe cut back a bit. Save the looking-down-on-the-world smirk for when you need it, all that. (user name=sharp-pastels site=livejournal.com> actually has a ton of fantastic A:TLA icons other than this one, just pointing that out.)

I love it to pieces, because it's just so Azula.

I kind of have a thing for phantom thieves, and Kaitou Kid is no exception. Even though I'm only sort of in Detective Conan/Magic Kaito fandom (*is still only 23 volumes into main canon*) I positively adore this character. Tragic past, secret identity, friendly rivals, deadly opposition, enjoys his work . . . the only thing that makes me at all sad is the fact that he is not a girl. Because the world does not have enough girl phantom thieves. But this does not make him not fantastic!

This is also my standard ":D!" icon. The full keywords are actually ":D no snipers this heist!" which may actually be kind of revealing about my perception of Kaito as a character.

I really like all the scenes where Utena plays sports, right from the basketball scene in the first episode. It's just really fun to see her run around and do stuff that's not related to the duels, having a good time. I also like the bright-but-sort-of-washed-out colours in this particular icon, and the way she's winking at the camera. Actually, I didn't even notice the baseball in her hand when I first started using it.

I just remembered that I wrote these up a while ago and forgot to post them! Oops.

21. Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

Nope, never. I tend to write things that don't need sequels, or things that are connected but not really related, or stories that are actually one big fanfic written as several smaller ones. I expect someday I will write one (Knife & Ink doesn't count, okay) but not for a while yet.

How do I feel about sequels? Well, sometimes they're good, and sometimes they're bad, and sometimes they're just not as good, and sometimes they're actually better. I think the best kind of sequel is something like Geas of Gryffindor, something that takes place after the original story but is not just a continuation of it. I guess I really don't like having one story split up into two—why bother? If it's long, then it's long. If it's two stories, one of which happens to be set after the other, then that's a real sequel.

22. Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I tried to participate in au_big_bang once, and failed miserably by both over- and under-thinking my plot. From that experience, I have learned that it's totally okay to elide over small details like timelines and period accuracy, so long as you know why the hell all the characters are doing what they're doing, and have a rough idea of where the hell they're going to end up.

I'd like to try that one again at some point, I think. But the one I'm really interested in is the idea for a potential Asexuality Big Bang someone on asexual_fandom proposed a while back. Partly because GO GO (GADGET) ASEXUALITY, partly because I don't think I would sit down and write any of the ace longfic I have semi-planned for quite a while yet without someone pushing on me. Then again, I hate being responsible for things. So IDK, really. But it might be fun, and even if I don't participate I'd really love for it to happen. Genfic is great and all, but I'd love to see some longfic with explicitly ace characters.

I've done fests and things, though. FMA Ladyfest, springtime_gen, blind_go, Yuletide. And I've signed up for a bunch more now, though it may not be the wisest thing to do on a full courseload. :D

23. When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

These days I mostly post to AO3, unless I'm responding to a prompt/participating in a non-AO3 fest/exchange. It does all the things I need it to do, it's pretty cool. But there's just something special about typing in a comment-box.

24. How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a beta horror story or dream story?

Well, I'd like to use at least one. :/ But since I usually write super-short things it just doesn't seem worth it to ask anyone. Maybe for stuff like Knife & Ink, when I write enough of it.

Horror story, now . . . well, let's just say I have become absolutely determined to only beta for people I am actually friends with. I just don't have the patience to work with people who a) I don't really know and b) can't master the apostrophe.

25. Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Sometimes I listen to songs to get me in a certain mood, sometimes I listen to them because they're catchy and they're stuck in my head. But yes, I do usually listen to music while I write. It's a combination of needing noise and needing to be able to control the noise—a lot of the times I can't stand the quiet, but I also can't stand the noise other people are making. So, loud pop music!

26. What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

Right now, I'm researching Heian-period waka structure and trying to pretend it's for Knife and Ink.

27. Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

I nearly always write at my desk, on my laptop. The bad thing about this is that it faces the windows, so I can see what a lovely day I'm missing while I sit inside and type. And it's kind of a pain to try to keep this on my lap while I type, or to lean over & type on it when it's on the floor, so I don't usually take it outside.

I like writing on the computers at school too, though. They have really fun keyboards, all big and clacky, which encourage typing.

28. Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

No. But I want to! [personal profile] fulselden, if you see this, let's co-write/shared-universe Knife & Ink together for awesome, okay?

29. What is your current project or projects? Is there a common theme here? I'm honestly not sure. )

30. Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

The Hermione-in-Ohtori fic is my favourite, full stop. I love everything I'm writing and most of what I've written, but this is my chance to just write about a bunch of stuff I like without worrying about things like whether or not it's period-appropriate or canonically accurate. Anything can happen, so long as it's in the right style and is full of symbolism! Also, I can finally write my favorite kind of romance. I think it's one of those months-long projects, but oh my is it ever going to be wonderful.

If I made Cinderella, the audience would immediately be looking for a body in the coach.
— Alfred Hitchcock

So, if I wrote a story what would you be looking for in it?

My own answer: UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE. For almost every set of pre-college-age-characters I've written so far, I think. (Next up, the Utena cast!)

14. Ratings—how high are you comfortable going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?

I'm comfortable with T, and could probably go M for things like discussion of genocide, etc. And I don't think I'd be comfortable writing too many details w/r/t violence. Writing about sex I am definitely not comfy with. I just want everyone to be frieeeends.

I have been shocked by finding that I was writing something that could be considered romance, though. Deep and complicated relationships do tend to get the romance label, I suppose, though I'm not sure whether the romance text/sub-text in that fic was intentional or not.

15. What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?

I think it's very, very important to warn for explicit violence and rape/sexual assault/general non-consentuality. It would be very nice if people would warn for stalking, excessive bigotry, pregnancy, destruction of books, and large amounts of tasteless jokes, so I could know what not to read on a bad day.

I generally don't write things that need warnings. I think I jokingly warned for "a teenager saying the word 'fuck' " when I was thirteen or so, but that's really the most esoteric thing I can remember warning/contains-ing for.

16. Summaries—do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?

I tend to stay away from stories without summaries, so of course I use them. I do rather like them; they're really just a combination of hook and accurate description. What's the most important thing about this fic that I can tell people without them having read it? And how can I phrase it to make it as attractive as I want it to be? A summary needs to tell you a lot about the fic it's distilled from, even if it's just a plain "Character X goes to college, and enjoys it very well. Post-canon" sort of thing.

I find them pretty easy to write, most of the time. Sometimes I come up with the summary before I write the actual fic, because it's just the basic idea behind the writing.

17. Titles—are they the bane of your existence, or the easiest part of the fic? Also, if you do chaptered fic, do you give each chapter a title, or not?

It depends! Sometimes it's very difficult to come up with a title that fits a fic I've already written, sometimes I come up with the title first (I still haven't found a use for High-Heeled Blues, except possibly for a Tiger & Bunny/The Big O crossover) and sometimes it just takes a few minutes of thinking. I have just lifted titles straight from poetry before, and I desperately want to write an asexual-life-partners fic to (not gonna write you a) Love Song. On the other hand, I really like making up titles that sound like they should be quotes from something but aren't; cf. music is no match for happiness (and grandness none for music).

I tend to plan same-universe-but-separate-fic stories just for getting around that second question. It's working so far.

18. Where do you get the most inspiration for your fics (aka 'bunnies') from?

Things people say or write, or moments in the canon, or similarities/differences between two characters will lead me to think Wouldn't it be cool if. . . .

Or I see someone's prompt and go Ooooh!

Or I read a story that's okay but not fantastic and think Y'know, I could take this idea and do it ninety degrees sideways & a whole lot better.

And I wonder about the things people write or make or do for fun in a canon universe that don't get shown. That sort of thing.

19. When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?

Usually I just keep them in my head, poking at them and turning them over occasionally until I'm ready to type the first sentence. Sometimes I just start writing, if it's for something whose background I already know or a short promptfic.

20. Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?

Yup. Sometimes I want to write fanfanfic, but usually it's just disappointment at a good premise poorly executed, or a general idea not followed up on. Usually nothing comes of it, but sometimes something does.

And now off to the library, and then off to Indiana.
esmenet: Fuu, Mugen, and Jin, all doing that ridiculous peace-sign-over-eyes pose (*dorky pose*)
7. Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?

Oh yes, all the time. I actually find it very difficult to write a character unless I've read lots of fic about them, preferably by different people, because my first understanding of a character is always nowhere near the one I end up with.

8. Do you write OCs? And, if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues? If not, explain your thoughts on OCs.

Yes!—although, strangely, not all that often. I love reading about original characters, but I'm not so good at creating them yet. Takes quite a bit of time & effort. Making sure they're not Mary Sues . . . eh. My general guiding principle is to not write stuff I wouldn't want to read, so it's just the same as for canon characters.

9. For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write? I wish people wouldn't ask me these questions. GENFIC: YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. )

10. Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone and written a pairing you liked, but found you couldn't write? Or a pairing you didn't like, and found you could?

Two words: Gen. Fic.

Combinations of characters that I like but can't write interacting, oh yes. Lots. Usually it's because I don't have a proper grip on one of the characters in question, or because I'm not good at writing scenes in which people decide that their best course of action is, indeed, punching this smug jerk right here in the face.

Characters' interactions that I don't like but can write, not at all. If I don't like something (unlikely) then I just won't try write it, except as an exercise in getting myself to enjoy something new.

11. Do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

In-universe works are my favourite, I think. Letters! Essays! History books! Research papers! Critical reviews! Poetry! Excerpts of classical novels! Popular fiction!

I don't actually write those very often, but I want to.

Other genres: domesticity, close friendship & created-family, big famous heroes deciding/attempting to live a quiet life, music, characters being fannish, slice-of-life, culture smash, cities/towns/buildings/schools as characters, genderfuck, loneliness/solitary-ness, youkai (or equivalent local spirits), crossovers.

12. Have you ever attempted an 'adaptation' fic of a favourite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

I don't think I quite understand what they're getting at here. Do they mean fusion-fic?

If so, not really. Thought about it a few times, but I tend to do crossovers instead. It's easier.

13. Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

It depends! Fanfiction is, by its nature, generally based on canon. When there's a certain fanon thing I really like, though, I'll jump on it and completely ignore canon if I need to. (For instance: To me, Hermione will always be the girl who said 'Oh, for God's sake. They're tampons. They're made of cotton wool. They absorb blood. They obey the laws of physics. They don't need to be fucking magical,' no matter how assimilationist she ended up being in canon.) And sometimes I'll change things that don't make a difference to the overall story, just because I want to—is it really bad writing to make KHR full of girls instead of bishounen, just because I can?

So basically I write what I like, whether it's based completely on canon or not.

As to the second question: oh goodness yes. Almost always, and even when it hasn't it makes me look harder at what I'm already thinking. Reading changes my opinions more than writing does, just because I do more of it, but writing makes me think things out all the way to the end. Which, I suppose, is why it takes so long.
