Episode eight:
I think Sally Po is my second-favorite character. "I want to be able to brag about knowing that guy who stopped the explosion." :D
I rather liked the depiction of Wufei & Khushrenada's swordfight. Usually swordfights in anime are shown as taking a super-long time, but real fights do tend to be fast.
If I didn't already know who Milliardo Peacecraft was, I would have thought he was an old friend of Zechs', or maybe someone he used to serve under. That was a nice scene all around.
Episode nine:
Noin is also a big favorite! I enjoy watching her & Zechs talk about politics.
Oh my god, basketball. WHY IS THERE BASKETBALL IN MY MECHA POLITICS SHOW.
. . . oh, right. Teenagers.
I am enjoying Duo's attempts to civilize Heero. Though, protip here: do not tell people to 'act normal' if they have no idea what 'normal' is. Then again, I suppose Duo doesn't have much experience there either.
Treize Khushrenada: MAKE EVERYONE HATE US. IT'S GOOD MOTIVATION.
Treize, I see you have read The Prince. Possibly you should also have read Machiavelli's less famous Discourses on Livy, wherein he explains that democratic republics actually work way, way better. So the Gundams + Tallgeese are built for suicide missions? Hmm. I wonder what the political situation was at the time they were designed.
The bit with Otto and Tallgeese and Zechs yelling at him to come back reminds me of Legend of the Galactic Heroes for some reason. I'm not sure why; it may be just the context + the animation style. [Note to self: start watching LotGH! ...again.]
Relena says "I'm just chasing after some guy," and I do wonder how many fans took that & ignored the rest of what she says there, that she needs someone to focus on, someone to support her, while she deals with her father's death. (answer: almost all of them. goddammit.)
Also I love that she has learned to associate giant firey explosions with Heero. ("Identifying features, miss?" "Dark fluffy hair, serious expression, half-Japanese, and in the vicinity of a destroyed OZ facility.")
I'm glad Zechs is the 'antihero' of the show rather than Treize (actually, come to think of it, he is the Gundam pilots' counterpart, with Treize being Relena's).
I mean, they could have focused on Treize's reactions to death tolls & the like, but I'm glad they went mostly for Zechs' instead. Treize could have been the nobly suffering general who sorrowfully sends out soldiers to die for the greater good, but tbh that would only have made me more pissed off at him. YOUR FRIENDS AREN'T GOING OUT THERE IN CHEAP MOBILE SUITS TO DIE POINTLESSLY, ASSHOLE.
Although they probably wouldn't have done that in any case, because Relena, on the other side of nobility-politics-things, has nothing to do with the death tolls & actual fighting. She's too young and without enough power and backing. So, for a good parallel, Treize has to stay mostly out of the war as a medium-distance thing (close friends & peers dying, being in personal command of battlefields, etc.) and only deal with it in either a faraway context, such as giving indirect orders or making speeches, or a personal one, like his duel with Wufei. Because Relena has contact with the war only as a distant thing or as a small-scale and very, very close-up one.
I wonder if Otto knew Zechs was the prince? Wait, no, what am I saying. This is a Gundam show. They were probably childhood friends who played in the gardens and dreamed about Making The World A Better Place together.
Okay, I know (well, am pretty sure) Relena won't get to meet Zechs until much later, at least not while being aware of their blood relation. But I really really really can't wait!

I really do wonder what's up with all this European aristocracy stuff. In-story, I mean. Any theories?

I wonder if there's a reason Lady Anne/Une wears leggings? Noin doesn't; her clothes are the same as Zechs' except for the jacket.
"Off to fight again, Heero? Well, I'm headed for my own battleground." RELENA ILU.
Aaaand of course they cut right back to OZ vs. Gundams. Dammit. Well, at least I can be glad I learned the word 必要 for the JLPT; they're using it very often.
Noin called her "Lady". Was she just imitating Treize, or was she being informal b/c Lady Anne/Une was in disgrace? Hmm.
