Episode Six: The Re-Watch

Is the romanization of Lady Une's name super official or only semi-official? Because if it's not actually endorsed by the original writers/directors, I am going to re-romanize it for myself as Lady Anne.

I think Treize Khushrenada is the Ohtori Akio of Gundam Wing, in that he comes up with seemingly super-deep things to say when someone asks him a fairly simple question. Except he also seems to have Anthy's talent with animals.

People seem to rag on both Relena and the show in general for its terrible fashion sense, but I do have to say that it actually seems pretty decent. Except for the Gundams, because wow Heero you really should have picked some better colours. Those look rather tacky.

"Yeah—why did I save her?" Heero, this is not actually a difficult question. And Relena gets what he's thinking/not thinking, you can tell by the way she pushes him to actually consider the question. (Btw, she gets SO MANY POINTS for being able to stand perfectly still & steady when a huge heavy sharp chunk of metal is aimed with more-than-deadly force a foot away from her head.)

And then Heero is like ACTUALLY I HAVE NO IDEA and flies away, attempting and failing a graceful exit. That guy.

I once (only semi-jokingly) said something about the ED being proof that this series is actually more about Relena than it is about the Gundam boys. I stand by that, but on a rewatch of this episode I believe it is actually some clever analogy concerning Relena and Treize (see: his magic animal powers). Sadly, Gundam Wing is not Shoujo Kakumei Utena and so I am probably wrong.

Incidentally, I hope people have already made all the (in)appropriate L. Frank Baum jokes about OZ. After all these years, they'd better have.

Episode Seven

The opening narration feels very old-school! Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and that sort of thing. I hate trying to understand those—that style of Japanese gives me a headache, I desperately need the subs—but it always sounds really cool.

流血へのシナリオ/Scenario for Bloodshed: who the hell calls anything by a name like that? Unless it's, like, a defunct military plan for genocide or something. Holocaust sort of thing. I really hope that wasn't the planners' working title, is what I'm saying here.

"Trowa, why do you keep disappearing?" "Oh, I'm just working for a terrorist organization. In my Gundam."

I liked seeing Quatre wandering around being a stereotypical rich-kid-on-his-own, calling hotels from payphones and all that. And I love how Duo and Quatre are both going "Let's team up! :D :D :D" at their respective dark-haired broody guys. I wonder if this is setting up for further parallels?

Dear random soldiers, I think you would be better off if you tried actually doing something when someone shouted "It's an enemy attack!" instead of standing in place and echoing those words.

It's very sweet of Zechs to give Noin trauma/trigger warnings.

"The future's about to head in the wrong direction." BECAUSE CLEARLY PEACE IS A TERRIBLE IDEA AMIRIGHT. I am sorry, Treize, but you do seem to do a lot of Aristocrat-ing and not a lot of fighting. And as we all know from Legend of the Galactic Heroes, people get more pro-war the farther they are from the front lines.

I think after Gundam Wing I need to sit down and watch more of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, do some comparisons.

I am kind of wondering if Treize or some of his OZ people are actually backing the Gundam pilots' bosses financially? Because that is some super convenient timing.

Treize, you are a smooth bastard and I hate you. Actually, scratch that: I don't just hate you, I hate you a lot. Jerk.

I wonder if we're going to get more perspectives from lower-ranking OZ people, or if Noin and Zechs are it? I would quite like to see more, especially with Noin and Zechs both wavering a little; I'd like to see if their opinions (are we doing this right/is it really worth attempting) are widespread.

Wufei: NICE GOING, JERKS, YOU KILLED THE PACIFISTS.

Heero: Well . . . fuck.

And Relena is going to do something, and it looks like we are headed for a Gundam Pilots Team-Up, so from now on things are definitely going to be interesting! Not that they weren't before.

Yay for awesome Relena scene. I like her, say, 70% of the time, which is as good or better than any of the Gundam pilots have gotten so far. (I'm only up to 10ish)

The ED?

And as we all know from Legend of the Galactic Heroes, people get more pro-war the farther they are from the front lines.

I don't know...Reinhard is pretty pro-war, even right on the front lines. He's got a lot invested in proving himself right as a war leader, rather than a politician. (Incidentally, how far are you in LoGH? I don't want to spoil anything.) Julian is also disturbingly pro-war, not in the sense that he wants it, but in the sense that he's a lot more willing to reach for it as practical than Yang.

I did a presentation on LoGH for Japanese class once, and of course everyone compared it to Gundam. :-) The distinction for me, which I tried to explain in awkward Japanese, is that LoGH is about the recognition that violence will play a part in public affairs but it's desirable to keep its role to a minimum (and thus becomes a debate over what sort of government can do that), whereas Gundam is all about the question of whether there can ever be a war to end all wars.
