I feel the need to write things again! Unfortunately, I'm kind of blocked on most of the stuff I'm working on. So, a writing(ish) meme!

Give me any iteration of a character I'm familiar with, and I'll give you at least one piece of headcanon/short fic for them. 'Any iteration,' of course, ranges from 'Jet' to 'Knife and Ink!Ty Lee' to 'Yankumi at Ohtori'. (Other people's ficverses are totally up for grabs, by the way. If I know 'em.) Other prompts of any kind are also welcome, but I refuse to promise anything for them. ;)

Ooooh. Knife & Ink!Iroh?

Zuko-centric fic is Zuko-centric because I still don't really know what to do with Iroh. Halp.

In retrospect, Iroh thinks, his nephew has turned out far better than anyone could have expected. He is functional, for one -- he can hold a conversation, he can smile and mean it. He can care about people (almost) openly, if not many of them.

He wonders about the boy sometimes, though. What is Ozai thinking to grant his weaker, unfavored child an independent command while Azula still fights to free herself of schools and tutors? Has Ozai set him up to fail, to appoint Azula later in his stead?

Iroh thinks about this once in a while, turning it over in his mind like a smooth river stone. He does not let himself think that perhaps it was not Ozai's idea to let the crown prince gain the glory and experience he wants, that Prince Zuko might be his mother's son and his sister's brother more than he is Iroh's nephew.


(Of course, the 'glory and experience' in question are the scholarly kind. But I'm not sure Iroh knows this.)

Thanks for the fic rec! I've hit a bit of a dry spell looking for good fic lately, so that helped. (Also, it's given me even more AU ideas, on top of the tons of AU ideas I have already. I'd be happy with this if I could, y'know, get over my writer's block one of these days. :PPP)

As for a request....how about Knife&Ink!Ursa, since that's the only fandom we really share right now and I'm still intrigued by your idea (especially since reading your Iroh ficlet left me wanting more). ^_^;

Zuko was lucky to be born, they say. No one tells him just how lucky. The past is past, after all, and people don't care to talk about what sweet, kind mothers did before they were mothers.

They particularly don't care to talk about what the Fire Lady did for the months she was with the Fire Sages, or how near to death she was by the end, never mind the child in her belly. Muscle and bone, no one says, and Zuko has always been a little weak, a little strange. Not spirit-touched, oh no. Just a little . . . off. You get them sometimes, of course, and usually they grow up so normal you'd never know they were the same child.

With her ancestry, she should never have gotten anywhere near the Fire Lord's son. She hid it with great care, of course, but that should never have been enough, even with all the years she spent running from the shadow of her grandfather. Would never have been enough, if she did not know how to cheat a little at the gamble that is life.

It is enough to give her a new family and a new name and a commission in the army, where she meets a general who burns hot and strong with all the talent and anger she could want.
