esmenetI am reading the new xxxHOLiC so I can have more Yuuko, and IT IS DELIVERING. I don't trust CLAMP with anything anymore, I think, but maybe they're learning from their mistakes.
When I first picked up xxxHOLiC it was for the atmosphere, and as I read more I realized that I didn't actually find Watanuki all that interesting (sorry! his personality isn't as entertaining to me as it seems to be to others) but I liked the manga anyway and was kinda invested in the Doumeki/Watanuki/Himawari relationship -- which I still am, a little. But really, when Yuuko died I just dropped the manga, because even aside from me being angry, at that point it just wasn't interesting enough anymore. I love Yuuko and her fantastic dresses and her mysterious attitude, and the other aspects of the manga just don't matter to me as much. Actually, I think the whole manga is sort of folded around her as the center; Watanuki may be the main character, but it's Yuuko with her knowledge and her personality that drives it. And when they killed off Yuuko and tried to put Watanuki in that role, it just didn't work. The structure of the story doesn't hold if you try to do that.
But now all of that has been erased and Yuuko is continuing on as ever, and I'm reading xxxHOLiC again until they kill off Himawari or something.
