I am reading the new xxxHOLiC so I can have more Yuuko, and IT IS DELIVERING. I don't trust CLAMP with anything anymore, I think, but maybe they're learning from their mistakes.

When I first picked up xxxHOLiC it was for the atmosphere, and as I read more I realized that I didn't actually find Watanuki all that interesting (sorry! his personality isn't as entertaining to me as it seems to be to others) but I liked the manga anyway and was kinda invested in the Doumeki/Watanuki/Himawari relationship -- which I still am, a little. But really, when Yuuko died I just dropped the manga, because even aside from me being angry, at that point it just wasn't interesting enough anymore. I love Yuuko and her fantastic dresses and her mysterious attitude, and the other aspects of the manga just don't matter to me as much. Actually, I think the whole manga is sort of folded around her as the center; Watanuki may be the main character, but it's Yuuko with her knowledge and her personality that drives it. And when they killed off Yuuko and tried to put Watanuki in that role, it just didn't work. The structure of the story doesn't hold if you try to do that.

But now all of that has been erased and Yuuko is continuing on as ever, and I'm reading xxxHOLiC again until they kill off Himawari or something.

Is xxxHOLiC Rei just a retcon of everything I hated about the xxxHOLiC ending?

...IT MIGHT BE. Stay tuned!

So I had a good birthday! The bit last night where I stayed up plotting Laura Hale fic was pretty great, and then the morning-afternoon was only okay, but this evening was super great. I finally broke down and got a hot plate so I can now secretly fry things at hot temperatures for long periods of time and/or cook things that require more than one pot. My (room? ex-room? flat?)mate came back early, and she looks even more gorgeous than she used to (or maybe that's just because everyone looks better with glasses, idk). I ended up cooking dinner really late, and she came in and we had a real conversation (every time we talk for an extended period of time I end up grinning, haha) and she ate some of my food! This is a big thing because she doesn't like vegetables and I'm a vegetarian, but apparently she likes zucchini. :D

And then I finally finished (one of the) Laura Hale fic(s) I've been working on! Longest thing not-for-a-fic challenge I've finished in a while, heh. It's here!

It is also the birthday of one of my favorite characters from a series I ended up (sort of) hating, Doumeki Shizuka of xxxHOLiC! Question: One or two years ago I started writing a rather nebulous medieval fantasy AU of xxxHOLiC in which Doumeki is a priest and Himawari takes him to gambling parlours because of reasons. I stopped because the ending of xxxHOLiC makes me so resentful and emotionally exhausted/cheated just to think about, it just wasn't worth it, but I feel like that's a good story that I would like to write. On the other hand, you can't rescue characters from their authors, and no amount of attempts at writing happy idfic will change that. Should I try to write that fic in full, as a birthday present to myself and one of my favorite characters, or should I just let it go?

I'd known for a while now that the story was going in a direction I didn't like; this ending is not a surprise, merely a disappointment. It feels like a betrayal, though, because this was not the story I signed up for. I loved the sometimes-silly-sometimes-serious ensemble hijinks of the anime and early manga, but it's clear now that the story I wanted to read wasn't the story they were telling. The things I liked about xxxHOLiC are the things that have been written out; no names shall be named, but I imagine most of you would not be surprised by whose they are. I will miss the idea of what this manga could have been; I will not miss what it became.

The things I loved about xxxHOLiC are, fortunately, the things Natsume Yuujinchou focuses on. :D
