So I spent Christmas with my cousins (and aunts and uncles and grandfather, but my cousins are the ones I actually spend all my time with), and had a super-great time. Somehow I managed not to have any moments of 'oh god I am shut up in here with all these people, get me the fuck out of here *EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN*' and was actually super-sad to leave. Maybe it's one of those 'growing up' things.
And while I was there, I finally watched Thor!
You guuuuuys, I have so many feelings about Loki! I did not expect to have feelings about any of these characters, but. Loki. To grow up in a culture where the things you are good at, the things you really like are not valued, where you feel you yourself are not either (and maybe your family loves you but they do not understand you, not at all, not in the ways you want them to)—gosh, no, I don't understand why I have all these feelings for the character & his situation at all.
I'm not quite sure if I approve of casting* him in a straight-out 'villain' role—my childhood love of him was very much based on the cycle of: Loki does something stupid because he's bored --> the other gods make him go fix it --> Loki fixes it in a really hilarious way --> they tell him not to do it again --> he gets bored --> cycle repeats—but I also think his actions in the movie were understandable, because if that is not a situation that generates confusing fucked-up feelings and bad decision-making then I don't know what is. As for his role in The Avengers, I'll have to wait and see.
So. Anyone got any Loki-centric Thor fic to recommend? (At this point I'm mostly looking for 'it's okay to be a fucked-up kid with family problems and no friends' fic, but honestly anything is great.
*Speaking of which, his actor was excellent. Really, really excellent. Not something I was expecting out of a Marvel movie, though perhaps I should have.
Also I see what people mean about LJ's headache-introducing new comment setup. I am only on there peripherally these days, thank goodness, but I think I'll be sticking to DW commenting as much as possible from now on.
