I found a 30 Days of Fanfic meme through Latest Things, and decided I'd just do however much of it I wanted whenever I wanted. (Well, actually I just want to do all of it, but I think I've typed more at once today already than I have for the past month.)
1. How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
When I was about ten I ended up taking a writing class for kids, and one of the girls there showed the class a Harry Potter fic she'd written. (It was terrible, but I loved it.) This immediately gave me a bad case of starry-eyed infatuation with fanfiction.net and a whole new interest in the internet, which I had previously used only to see if the library had a book I wanted. I wrote some stuff after that, but most of it was trash and it's all gone now. I read a whole bunch of Harry Potter, but I think my first real fandom was Young Wizards. It had magic that ran off the universe's programming language, magic that was science. And characters who decided to be heroes, who followed orders from the higher-ups but were not defined by those commands. Who weren't cut off from the world around them because they were wizards, but instead were as connected as anyone could be. (Points for them against Harry Potter that I didn't realize at the time: not completely ethnocentric! POC main characters! Actual meetings with wizards from foreign communities! A girly-girl who is not nice! Points against: entropy is not evil, okay? Okay. Your autism is also not a thing you can separate from your brain, I'm pretty sure.)
The first fic I really wrote for it was a total Dairine/Roshaun slushfest. I regret how bad it was, but not that I wrote it.
Or maybe my first fandom was Tamora Pierce, which I have no idea whether or not I ever wrote fic for. Or perhaps it was Harry Potter, which I definitely wrote some terrible things for way back in the day. But I think that was after the YW fic, and even though I have mixed feelings about Young Wizards now, the things I loved about it are still some of the things I like.
2. Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.
Harry Potter: some longfics that never panned out, mostly crossovers. A few short fics about Narcissa and Madam Zabini and Tracey Davies and Hogwarts and wizard poetry. I kind of hate trying to write for this fandom, because there are so many things I don't like about it and keep not having enough energy to fix, but I keep doing it anyway. Right now, I've got a fic on the back burner that involves Slytherins and Hufflepuffs forming a Muggle Studies group so they can hang out with their friends under Umbridge's fule, which sort of turns into an extra-curricular course on How To Immigrate To the Muggle World And Still Be A Wizard but is actually called The Modern World Club. And on the front-burner we have a fic in which Hermione transfers to Movie!Ohtori, which I am writing from every different approach I can think of until it works properly. It may end up being several different fics. And I rather want to write a fic about Hermione and Dean as an aromantic couple, with lots of kissing-on-the-cheek and friend-dates.
Utena: surprisingly, not much. I find it a difficult fandom to write for, even though I love it dearly. Mostly movie-verse crossovers or post-series fic, all quite short. Currently working on a charity auction fic about Saionji, which has stalled because I need to re-watch the series and keep not doing it. Perhaps I'll have to forget about the rewatch and just write the damn thing. (Also kind-of-sort-of working on an Otomen/Utena movie thing, which I haven't touched in almost a year.) Plus the Hermione-in-Ohtori fic mentioned above, which is mostly an excuse to wallow around in describing the school's magic and have Hermione flirting with girls.
Katekyou Hitman Reborn!: a bunch of short fics, mostly character studies or crossovers. I'm only sort of in it at the moment, because I want to write them all as angsty girls and canon is making me laugh too hard to do that unless I can get my head in the right place. The basic theme of my KHR genderswap fic seems to be '(in the mafia) girls can't afford to be nice,' and I'd like to keep it that way.
Avatar: the Last Airbender: I think I can safely say this is my main fandom right now. I've written two fics for it that I think are better than most of the others I've written ever, several ficlets I like very well, and am in the process of drafting two or three long, long AUs. I love this fandom!
Chronicles of Chrestomanci: my first Yuletide fic. I think it's the only one I feel a need to write.
Mekakushi no Kuni/Land of the Blindfolded: last year's Yuletide fic! I would like to write more in this fandom, even if I'm pretty sure it would just be the same fic several tens of thousands of words longer. Maybe a crossover at some point.
Fullmetal Alchemist: last year's fma_ladyfest fic, and hopefully next year's too. I am sad about skipping out on this year, because now I think I could have done it. I don't feel a particular need to write fic for this series, but I've enjoyed doing so when someone's asked me to.
Ashita no Ousama: currently working on one or two help-japan fics. One or two, because one of them is actually a set of reviews written by an original character and I'm not sure if that's the kind of thing my recipient wants. But I do want to write it, so.
Natsume Yuujinchou: one Taki ficlet for
littlebutfierce. More to be forthcoming at some point in time; perhaps some crossovers?
Hikaru no Go: one crossover blind_go fic last year, maybe more in the future. I know somebody prompted a Natsume Yuujinchou crossover, but I'm not sure I could write it. This is one of those fandoms that I do genuinely enjoy but has problems that I can't quite articulate.
Gokusen: one Utena crossover ficlet last year, probably similar things to come.
xxxHOLiC: a few ficlets here and there. I really want to write AUs about Himawari and Doumeki and Watanuki all hanging out in various contexts, but every time I've tried they didn't quite work out.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: one ficlet about trans Kaiba. I'd like to write more about her in particular, but I do quite enjoy this series' particular brand of magic, so crossovers would be pretty cool. And I think Anzu and Ryou in particular need more love, so maybe I'll write something.
Detective Conan/Magic Kaito: a couple of short ficlets, a few attempts at longer things that didn't work out at all. This is another series that I have unvoiced problems with; if and when I do write more, it'll probably be all about the girls, since they don't get to do a whole lot in the criminal-of-the-week plotlines.

Date: 2011-07-28 01:43 am (UTC)If I ever write more Natsume fic I will be very happy about it! And ooh, Taki's second arc! I might need to start watching the anime just for that.
Haha, so far she's just going 'how does this magic wooooork' and missing Harry and Ron. And developing a bit of a crush on Juri. (Why, why, why don't I have any icons from the Utena movie? I'm starting to really need one.)

Date: 2011-07-30 09:59 am (UTC)If they fuck up the storehouse arc in the anime I am going to cry! I'm going to be traveling back from London when it airs, but I have a free Crunchyroll trial again, so I might be able to get enough wi-fi in the bus station to watch it on my phone before we leave & hit the motorway. Hahahaha.
Juri is totally the most crushable one in Utena!!!

Date: 2011-07-28 01:55 am (UTC)Dairine/Roshaun is still totally my OTP, though. :D Just talking about it made me get up and fetch my copy of Wizards at War to re-read all the shippy scenes. (I totally forgot about his parents being all "Hello, son's foreign girlfriend!" And the "That was entertaining. And informative." line. Oh, Roshaun.)
