First up, questions from [personal profile] littlebutfierce!

1. Hermione vs. Taki: who wins, & why?

I think it would depend on whether Taki has time to investigate and prepare. She tends to make traps. —In a fight, that is. They might be equally matched in a research battle. (And would probably enjoy it quite a lot!)

2. Tell me something about a tradition or a quirk or something your family has.

Hmm, this is a hard one. Well, if it's the family as a whole and not just me (Lunar New Year's chocolate cake!) then I would have to mention the way we get all Swedished up for Christmas and Santa Lucia. Everyone brings out the dala horses and the Santa Lucia figurines and the teensy wooden roosters and the straw Christmas Goats (don't ask me why Swedes need goats for Christmas) and my mother (maybe my aunts too, I don't know) bakes Swedish cookies. Pepperkaka and spritz cookies, om nom nom. And we make tea rings. And then when it's January we continue sneaking cookies out of the freezer and pack everything else back up, not speaking of it again for the rest of the year. Unless we visit Lindsborg.

What outfit would you wear every single day if you could get away w/it?

For comfort or for style? For comfort, pretty much what I wear in the summer—loose skirt, long or short, fitted t-shirt in pretty colours, maybe with something written on it, sandals with a low wedge. Looks nice-ish while not being uncomfortable in the slightest. If only it would carry over to winter!

For style, something like this dress. Maybe with these shoes, and almost any one of these hats. Or, for another look, a loose black skirt, a colorful shirt, and these shoes.

There's more, but I don't have time to hunt them down now. :D

4. Tell me about your fic-writing process (anything from idea generation through to finally posting)!

I generally have a thought of "Oh, wouldn't that be cool!" e.g. Zuko going to Ba Sing Se University, Hogwarts students deciding to leave the wizarding world for the muggle one, (insert character here) in movie!Ohtori Academy, Taki having a run-in with Kaitou Kid. Anything. Then I turn it over in my head for a while, from hours to weeks to months, and either it starts going somewhere or it doesn't. If it does, I start writing.

Writing is haaaard. I tend to nitpick my sentence structure and word choice as I go, so there's a lot of backtracking. Even more, because while I often have big things planned out, things that change the whole story will happen without warning (from a sentence that needs to be put in earlier to a completely different character/background/genre focus). This is why I tend to go in for short fics; it's easier to get every word (almost) right, and there doesn't have to be a long-running plot at all! \o/ I'm a very atmospheric writer, I suppose. Mood over characterization over plot.

5. If you could magically learn one skill instantly, what would you pick?

Ranma 1/2-style martial arts. So useful! I mean, almost anything could happen to you (and oh boy it would) and you and all the things you care about would be okay. Also, I could learn how to break rocks by poking them! That would be pretty cool. Yeah, this would be my number one pick.

As for definite real-world skills, I'd have to say charisma. The ability to smile at people and talk to them openly and have them just do what I need them to do. To be able to talk my way out of trouble. Confidence. Poise. Constructing watertight arguments before and as I'm talking. I could do a lot of stuff with that. But then again, maybe I don't want to. I do rather like the personality I have now, and it's way too easy for charismatic people to turn into assholes underneath the charm. So maybe that should just be 'skill of handling self well in social and administrative situations'*.

If I could use it on something I already kind of have, though, it would be musical ability. I've been playing the violin for ten years, and I'm a lot better than I was even two or three years ago, but I'm nowhere near good enough. I've seen/heard people talking about how it really does take talent to be good at music (and what is that, and how do you know if you have it?) and, on the other hand, someone telling the story of how she just didn't connect with music the way other musicians did, and she faked it for a long time, and, yeah, 'fake it till you make it' really does work.

I just want to get better faster, I suppose.

*You would not believe the moments I've had of "oh god, I have to call someone and ask them something! With a phone! Can I get someone else to do this for me can I google it (no) aaaaa what do I do *mild panic*" Or the opportunities I've passed up on because I'm scared to do write job applications or resumes or even intimate to someone that I might possibly be interested in doing something for them that requires compensation. (I'm a gift economy girl, okay. Fandom is my social model.)

Hee, thanks for all this! Yeah, I think the fight between Hermione & Taki would be a tough one to call!

I am so not a plotty writer at all, ha. Which is why it is frightening that I have been besieged by Natsume futurefic ideas w/PLOT. Augh.

I want questions too please! (even though I am so far behind w/mine I dunno when I'll get to them... ;_; )
