A writerly question: If I were to write a fic that consisted entirely of a character's blog posts, should I format it appropriately and post it to AO3/DW as always? Or should I make an RP-style journal and post it like a real blog? (And if that last one, on what site?)

Also, out of curiosity: do you, r-list, like to read about OCs? I tend to go "Yes! Yes! Outsider views on and reactions to canon events!" but I also know some people who don't like using OCs even for bit parts. Which one is more common, at least among people I know?

Ahahaha, blog posts as fic sounds awesome. I'd say it's still good for AO3, why not?

OCs can be iffy--sometimes I just love the canon characters so much I don't want to switch to someone new & unknown, who then has to win my heart. I don't mind them for bit parts though.

I think we only share like 2 fandoms, so the answer probably won't make a difference to me, but what fandom are you thinking of this blog post thing for???

For question one: why not both? "Format is appropriately" and post it to AO3, and make a RP style journal and post it like a real blog on DW? (If you need any codes, I still have some left).

For question two: not really. There are exactly two fics where I like the OCs, out of several thousands.

I wouldn't see any reason not to post to AO3. And I don't have too many strong feelings about OCs -- I don't exactly seek out stories about them, but if a fic about an OC sounds interesting I'll definitely check it out. I sometimes write them but they're often the kind of OCs that one would expect from the universe (e.g. a relative of an existing character).

If well-done, I think OCs can be awfully interesting - and it's really nice to expand the universe out a bit - but if I'm looking for an outsider view on/reaction to canon events, I'll more likely gravitate to a minor named character than an original one.

As to the first, I'd say it depends on how long/extensive it is. I'd probably format a shorter fic as one post on AO3 and not bother with the creation of a full-out blog for it. On t'other hand, if it's really extensive... creating a blog could be really cool and fun. Depends on how much you want to put into it, I'd say.

I like reading OCs, and god knows I use them all the time. In my experience, they're kind of rare, though--because I generally am not terribly interested in the kind of OC who's standing in as a self-insert for the author and is there to romance the author's favorite character. I got my own self-inserts for that and am not particularly interested in other people's fantasies. On the other hand, OCs who are there to be foils for the canon? Bring it on, that's awesome.
