I have very, very mixed feelings on this fic. They're not bad feelings, any of them, but I think I'm a little disappointed that a fic as good as this one was clearly not written for me.
That is to say, I love about half -- maybe three-fourths -- of the whole great big long thing to death. I want to give all the students great big hugs, because they are clearly growing up to be Nice Young People even if they aren't quite there yet. I kind of want to hug Snape, because he's dealing with himself and his problems and all the other problems people are throwing at him very well. I really want to hug Hermione, with her terrible horrible crush she wishes would just GO AWAY; even if she only gets a few scenes, I am quite familiar with that feeling and would like to reassure her that yes, it will vanish off into the aether someday and leave her to be happily solitary.
It also has the best portrayal of Molly Weasley I've ever seen. She wants to be mother to the whole world, and also is related to Nanny Ogg. :D
The fic's exploration of magical theory is also wonderful. There's not a whole bunch of it, most of it focusing on potions overload, but it's very interesting.
(And Trelawney a) begins teaching Muggle Studies, and b) likes women. \o/)
I don't even really have a problem with the things that turn the fic from OMG YAY EVERYTHING HERE IS AWESOME to 'mixed feelings', it just . . . makes me a bit uncomfortable. It's not offensive, but. well, a big part of the whole story is about sex, or, failing that, romance. I guess this is the way most sexuals see the world, with sex just being a natural part of many things, but I kept getting jarred out of the story a little with every mention of magic that involved sex, every "What man wouldn't?", every dirty magazine. All those things are well-written and plot-relevant, of course -- it's a brilliant story (and you should read it). But combined all together, they made me feel very out of place in a way the most cliche-ridden of heteronormative romance fics usually fail to.
This is a wonderful fic, and you should read it for the bits with the apprentices if nothing else, but it was very clearly not written with asexuals in mind.
