So! I finally watched the Evangelion movie reboot-thingie, You Are (not) Alone. It was good!
Everything had to be compressed a lot, so a good deal of the humour that was in the first part of the series is notably absent, as are a lot of the more in-depth personal connections (Shinji spends his 'running away' time sleeping on the streets and walking around the countryside rather than staying in Kensuke's tent, for instance). The scene I've always loved of Misato just standing, arms folded, in front of the window while Unit 00 tries to bash it in: gone. She's been replaced there by Gendou, which is not nearly as revealing of anyone's character. Two of the Angels, the ray-shooting one and the drilling one, have been merged, and they changed the numbering. (Which matches up with what I first thought when I watched the anime, that Rei had fought one angel a while before Shinji got there.)
However, I think all the things that were left out were completely made up for by everybody BEING AWESOME. Misato is her beer-drinking messed-up self, and we get to see her drinking with Ritsuko and figuring out how to handle Shinji and his problems, as well as about half an hour total of her giving orders and coming up with mad awesome plans. :D And Shinji himself was pretty cool. I don't remember if his constant "nigenakucha dame" (mustn't run away? can't run away? who knows.) was present in the original series before the last episode or two, but it's a nice touch here. Especially because he does run away, and then decides to come back. And he charged that one Angel with a minute left on the clock -- I remember him following orders and retreating in the show, and this is a nice contrast. He seems a little more, I don't know, connected? In his head.
And REI. Rei Rei Rei Rei. So much love. She slapped him so early on this time! And she seemed quite angry at him before that for messing around in her apartment, too. I always liked Rei, but oh wow. *_* "I'll protect you." ♥ ♥ ♥ &rei;
Mmm, I like that Touji and Kensuke sent Shinji adorable heartening voicemails, despite having spoken to him for about fifteen minutes total before that point.It was an emotionally intense fifteen minutes okay. (Well, also the hour or so stuck in the Entry Plug, I guess.) "We're counting on you!" "Good luck!" It give me hope that there will be more happy things in this, y'know, anime about the end of the world.
I was not expecting Kaworu there at the end! I wasn't super surprised, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the second movie now.If you know me, you will not be surprised that I like Kaworu a great deal.
Also, I know I've heard Eva 01's voice before, back in episode whatever when it ate part of that Angel. But it's really a very scary sound . . . I guess that means they did it right. *shiver*
I don't suppose any of you have recs for Eva fic? I'm in the mood for it again after a very long while. Brownie points if they're not about Shinji having sex with girls or "manning up" (yes, I did read a good portion of Shinji and Warhammer 40k. It was okay, but I'm not sure I would like it as much if I read it after learning the meaning of the word "privilege". I did, however, enjoy I Was A Teenage Dummy Plug, Taking Sights, and Paradise Lost, among others).

(Even Asuka, which is funny, because that improved mental health is actually why she's so much more obviously broken in movie 2; you can't fake sane as well as Asuka did in the original if you don't have the damage to the head that makes it look like a good idea.) Jury's still out in my mind whether that's a good thing, but I won't lie, it makes for a more conventionally satisfying narrative experience. I've more thoughts on Rebuild vs. Evangelion here (some pretty major spoilers for movie 2 there, so it may not be as helpful as I'd like it to be if you're interested in avoiding that sort of thing).
Fuck yeah someone else who likes I WAS A TEENAGE DUMMY PLUG. Talk about a blast from my past, I haven't thought about that story in years! (I also drew fanart for it once that I never uploaded anywhere because I had no scanner.) You know what was another Eva fic I remember enjoying waybackwhen? The deliciously creepy and unnerving FANE OF THE FIREBIRD, probably the only Utena/Eva crossover I've found worth my time. I haven't reread it in years, though, and I remember it going severely off the rails into stuff I wasn't sure the conceit really justified, so take that into consideration. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know of anyone writing any new stuff that I care for, as of yet.
I've written exactly two Eva fics, one unfinished post-EoE sextet and another that's spoilery for the second of the Eva remake movies AND a post-EoE story, haha, but I'm fond of them and if you want links I'll be glad to provide them. I also did a fanart rec post, which isn't fic but I feel will nevertheless be right up your alley. ETA: And I made some only-vaguely-spoilery-so-pretty-much-not icons too.
(So glad I'm not the only one turned off by SAW40K's excessive chauvinism.)
