Just saw this and this, and they made me think a bit. I don't even usually think of writing trans characters, just because there aren't really any in my preferred writing-canons . . . and unlike with same-sex relationships, it somehow hasn't occurred to me to just *mention* them in the fic background, even in an oh-btw-X-is-Y kind of way.

It hurts to realise I've been marginalizing people I care about.

. . . Okay, cheerful time now! So, f-list, if you transitioned -- or, hell, if you already have -- what name would you use? *curious* (I'd probably use 'Alan', just because I'm really fond of male names beginning with A and we already have an Alexander in the family.)

Also: prefacing something offensive with "No offence," or saying it was "just a joke" DOES NOT MAKE IT OKAY. In fact, it makes me want to kill you more.

I wouldn't change my name at all. Having had my last name changed three times already in my life due to adoption has made me very possessive of my name now that it has stuck. It is MY name, and no matter what, now it always wll be. Not that I would ever want to get married, but if I ever do, not a chance in hell I would change my name. So, should I somehow end up a man, my name would still be Kim.

Paul. Mostly because Gabriel occasionally calls me Paul anyway... Dune reference. LOL.

I haven't a Dreamwidth account; if you do, you might want to point out the Thai action film Mercury Man to IambicKilometer. The hero's MtF sister--played by an MtF actress and pro Thai boxer to boot!--gets to kick butt, take names, and be treated generally respectfully by the narrative (although there are periodic humorous allusions to her status, such as the scene in which she inspects herself for damage after each fight scene because "I just paid for these boobs!")

She's the tall angular one with the ponytail who first appears at 1:04: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrhm2Lxg92M

(If you're wondering where I popped up from, I strayed here from a Fanficrants discussion of Snape's speech patterns.)

That sounds fantastic. :D D'you have any idea if [livejournal.com profile] darkeyedwolf knows about it?

IIRC, you can use your LJ account (http://www.dreamwidth.org/openid/) to comment on Dreamwidth.

I'd never so much as heard of DarkEyedWolf before, but I'll be happy to PM them the info, since moments of transwin aren't exactly thick on the ground.

And thank you for the tip re Dreamwidth. (I wish Journalfen would be so accommodating; they list a slot on their reply form for Livejournal users, verbatim, but won't allow readers to post from an LJ account, and aren't accepting applications for new JF accounts; if you ask them why, the stock reply is--I'm serious!--"It's just to torment you.")
