For a shounen series with lots of awesome female characters who also get to save the day (and save the male main character), you should check out Psyren. It's a fairly short series (I think 15-16 vols total) and just ended recently. I have squeed about it here (scroll to the bottom for a review when I first started reading it; other entries are mostly reaction posts). I haven't written my final review yet, because I don't think the last volumes have been released and I always wait until then to write a series review, but I read the ending when it ended in Jump and I was very satisfied with the series as a whole. Definitely one of the best Jump manga I've ever read.
