2010 fic meme!
Dec. 30th, 2010 07:53 pmTotal number of completed stories: Seven, plus a bunch of tiny commentfics and lots of things that need to sit for a while before I work on them again. Pretty good, for someone who can't seem to stop plotting things out long enough to write any of them.
Total word count: . . . including the things I'm not going to finish up or show to anyone? 14,887. Two-thirds of those are slush, of course. But I think I've nearly got the hang of only writing fics that can hold my interest, or at least deleting and re-starting the ones that don't.
Fandoms written in: Harry Potter, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katekyou Hitman Reborn!, Hikaru no Go, Utena, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Detective Conan, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Gokusen are the only ones I'm willing to admit to.
Leitmotif(s) of the year: Holding on -- don't let them grind you down, maybe she can't win but she's not going to lose -- and being comfortable with yourself.
Favourite fic: Knife and Ink (A:TLA, T, wordcount unknown)
All of it. Sometimes it makes me go ARGH, and every time so far (excepting wild flowers that are never seen in spring) I've started a piece of it, I write about a hundred painstaking words before I have to delete the whole thing and approach it from a different angle. But that's how I work anyway, so that's all right.
Best fic: My Yuletide fic, which I will tell you about later. :D
Most popular fic: Four Things Narcissa Might Have Been, And One She Still Is (Harry Potter, Narcissa, G, 1048w)
I love Five Things fics (I barely have to expand things at all! Yay!) and writing this one was lots of fun. It's probably popular because of a)that, b) being written for a big fandom, and c) being about Narcissa, who if she is not amazingly popular all on her own really should be.
Most underappreciated fic: And Speak to Strangers (Hikaru no Go + Katekyou Hitman Reborn!, Nase & Bianchi, K+, 621 words)
There's not really a big intersection of Hikaru no Go fans and KHR fans, I admit, and a crossover with an unknown fandom tends to make people reluctant to click, even with a label saying you don't need to know either fandom.
Favourite first line(s): Azula wakes, and the world burns. (Okay, so maybe that's a summary. I'm not sure yet.)
Most fun fic: the one with Yankumi & Shin in Ohtori (Gokusen + Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Yankumi & Shin & Touga & Akio, G, 154w)
Maybe not the most lyrical of prose or the most surprising of plot twists there, but bwahaha I want to write more of this. (And eventually I will!)
Sexiest fic: I don't write sexy fic. Sorry?
Fic that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: rags and tags and velvet gowns (Yu-Gi-Oh!, Kaiba Seto, G, 115w)
I understand and like Kaiba a lot more now! That's pretty much the only change. All the genderfuckery fic (genderswap, sex-and-gender-swap, random addition of boobs) has also made me think long and hard about what personality bits come from where.
New pairing/genre/fandom you never predicted writing in January: I don't think I predicted writing a giant A:TLA AU. Or writing anything at all for Detective Conan (which I still haven't yet, really). Or plotting out Mai/Kuei. I don't think I'd even heard of the Gokusen manga in January. Yay, new things!
Hardest fic to write: The one I'm working on right now. Of course. (No, Jet! Go away! I don't want to write fic about y-- aw shucks.)
Biggest disappointment: I wish I'd written more -- or, failing that, researched more.
Biggest surprise: I never thought I'd begin to like Azula so much.
Most telling fic: *secretive smile* My Yuletide story. Not only does it say a lot about my writing, it also says a lot about me.
What's next? More Knife and Ink. More short stories for tiny fandoms. More short stories for big fandoms. More long stories, if I ever learn the proper balance between 'totally unprepared' and 'planning so much everything gets deadlocked before 500 words in'. More genfic. More things like Knife and Ink, maybe, where I write things a little at a time and confuse people by having the worldbuilding at the end be different than it was at the beginning and have lots of fun. Maybe even something where a single part is over 1000 words.
No, really, what's next? Sleep. Any listing of the year's fic will have to wait until morning.
