Okay, I've had this concept lurking in the back of my head for a year or so now, and I think it's worth articulating just to stop it bouncing around my brain. You know the way a lot of really good anime openers and endings give a different feel -- or an entirely different plot concept -- than the actual show? I keep wanting to write fic based on those. ^_^;; Like, I'm pretty sure I could come up with a noir-ish thing with the first Sailor Moon opening.
So, uh, the real point of this is Bleach. -_-
Mind you, I'm not really caught up on the canon, except for a few things -- Gin's bankai, everyone still being in Hueco Mundo, the new and gorgeous ED -- but I always liked the characters and kind of hated the plot. The first opening, for instance, was gold -- it made me want to see happy-go-lucky high-school kids involved with organized crime, something like that. Not a guy with a sword fighting other guys with swords. (Okay, so that doesn't happen until the second opening crops up. But still.) I do enjoy some canon-verse Bleach fic, for the record, but I've never really cared too much about Soul Society and fighting Arrancar and all that.
Then I saw this post. And then I saw the new ED, in all its Baccano-esque glory. And they made me think: why is there 'soul candy' if shinigami are always in Soul Society, and generally don't have bodies they need to fool people with? Why is there money that can apparently be spent in the living world?
Shinigami can't be based entirely out of Soul Society. Otherwise, the shinigami on rotation in the living world would just kill hollows, konso souls, and sit on rooftops the rest of their shift. You wouldn't need any of the things Rukia buys from Urahara -- and just who does Urahara sell to, anyway? The rank-and-file, at least, must live normal lives a good portion of the time.
. . . So basically what this leads up to is I want to read/write/talk about the possibility of a Bleach based off the colour splash pages and non-canon OP and EDs rather than the actual anime and manga. I'm a nerd for Durarara!! and Baccano!-ish stuff, what can I say? ^_^;;
