Apparently, I get to write a paper on my 'area of academic interest' for English 102! So, um. I'm wavering between a comparison of lolita & hard femme or something about the construction of femininity in magical girl shows/70s shoujo manga/Kuragehime (once I've read it)/modern shounen manga/etc.*

I'm not sure if I'm asking for help or crowing in delight.


*Gender studies is totally my area of academic interest, what are you talking about.

I'm not sure I get what "hard femme" means (apparently English-speaking people use "femme" with a meaning different than just "woman"? this is so damn confusing >__<), BUT.
A paper on the construction of femininity in Kuragehime would be AWESOME. Even though I've only watched the anime and it was some time ago, what I remember of the heroine and her cross-dressing friend would make a great material for a paper.

(I don't know about magical girls or shoujo manga, but if you pick Kuragehime, you could look at the influence of the mothers of the main protags, at the heroine's self-esteem (her page on the Kuragehime wiki has a couple picture illustrating that really well) and at the "cleaning up nicely" trope.)

It has been explained to me that 'femme' is to 'feminine' as punk rock is to pop rock -- superficially similar, but with more attitude and spikes.

I've been putting off reading/watching Kuragehime for aaaages, so this might be the push I need to get started! Even if I end up doing something else.
