[general stuff]

Shoujo Kakumei Utena:

When it comes to things like Utena, I tend to get really invested in theme and symbolism, &c, so I would love something that plays heavily on that, maybe even something set in the movie continuity. That said, I would *also* love something exploring Nanami's or Kozue's personality, or some happy Student Council hijinks.

I was always sad that most of the Student Council's time was spent dealing with personal crises and/or Akio messing around, because the few times we did get to see them hanging out and having fun were just wonderful. (If you have the opportunity to read the video game playthroughs (over at Empty Movement) they have EXTRA AMOUNTS of student council hijinks! Apparently, the only reason Touga gets to be president is because he's the oldest. >.>) Even the little "It looks like friendship saved the day!" line in the movie made me really happy.

Actually, I am a fan of hijinks in general. There are two ways I would really love for you to go with this request: super serious evocative thematic whatever, and RIDICULOUS HIJINKS FOR ALL, and either one would make me super happy.

Availability: It was re-released in both the US and Japan quite recently, so copies for purchase and/or download are easy to find.

The Middleman

I love everything about this show. Everything. It's all good. --that said, there are some things I love more than others: Wendy and the Middleman's bro-ness, Wendy and Lacey's friendship, Wendy bringing up art stuff in the middle of work (e.g. 'Not bad for a classical realist'). And, um. Wendy in general. Casefic would be lovely, but I always get blocked when somebody asks me for casefic, so feel free to do something outside of that scope. Maybe Barbra Thornfield MD, PhD, finally comes to visit?

You should also know that I love crossovers for this show! Even before I watched it, I read a crossover and loved it. Mostly because crossovers almost always include Wendy calling people out on their weird shit, which is something I positively adore. (I love how genre-savvy she is!)

Also, if you want to write A Day In The Life Of Ida, I would be totally on board with that.

Availability: It's pretty easy to find, I think, hardcopy or otherwise. And it's only twelve episodes long, plus or minus the scrip of the unaired thirteenth episode.

Gokusen (manga)

Yankumi and Shin's relationship is possibly my favorite in any thing ever. She is a dorky math teacher who is secretly badass! He looks like a badass teenager but is secretly a dork! Together, they engage in vaguely illegal shenanigans!

Lastly, I'm not familiar with any of the dramas, so if you could work off the manga I would be very much obliged.

I'm just going to c&p my request from a few years ago.

The tale of a dorky badass yakuza math teacher and her cool-looking (but secretly dorky) brilliant student.

Basically it is the BEST THING EVER. And here is a picspam to prove just how awesome and hilarious and badass and feminist it is. Including much emphasis on the fact that, while Shin may be all cool and intelligent, he is in fact the non-badass love interest and will have to put up with getting kidnapped and being left out of the fights just like every other love interest in high-school-delinquent manga. (Quote from the picspam: "Sometimes, if there are other people around that she needs to hide her badassery from, she will graciously allow him to punch out a bad guy that she's already defeated.")

I'd love to see fic about Shin going to Tokyo University. How do his class- or dorm-mates deal with the occasional intrusion of his yakuza acquaintances into their peaceful, entirely-legal lives? (Or are they?) How does he deal with being away from his friends? Does Yankumi ever visit? What happens when everyone goes around calling him "Young Master Red Lion"? (A name I'm sure he still thinks is super uncool.) What's Yankumi's new class like?

Or crossovers! Crossovers would be AMAZING. And easy! Yankumi probably knows Kasanoda from Ouran High School Host Club, and Shin is probably related somehow to Yotsuba's dad. Gokusen is ridiculously easy to cross over with things -- Detective Conan, KHR, almost anything could work.

Availability: Here are all fifteen volumes. Warning: may cause inability to sleep until finished.

Samurai Champloo:

I love this show, and I love the ending, and I spend a lot of time desperately hoping that they met up again a few years afterwards and went adventuring again and everything kept on being happy and amazing and perfect. I just want them to run around having wacky period-inappropriate hijinks together for the rest of their lives.

I know some people ship Mugen/Fuu, or Mugen/Jin, or occasionally Jin/Fuu, but to be perfectly honest I can't imagine two of them in a relationship that didn't include the third. So, um, genfic or threesome, please?

If you'd rather write about just Fuu, that's fine too, of course. She's my favorite. But I really love the dynamic that the three of them have.

Also, I would like to add a ditto to everything in [personal profile] nextian's Samurai Champloo request.

So I kind of . . . totally disappeared for a while there! My apologies. Normal service should resume shortly, though possibly not until after midterms.

I keep wishing I'd signed up for Kaleidoscope, but I know I didn't have enough energy or time. With this in mind, I should definitely not sign up for Yuletide, as that is way more stressful and I like the people running Yuletide a lot less. But they let Utena in as a fandom this year, so maybe I have to. HELP. (edit: FUCK THEY HAVE THE MIDDLEMAN NOW I REALLY DO HAVE TO.)

The actual point of this post: There is a prompt-fest for whatever the hell you please going on, and everyone should get right on that and tell all their friends about it too. Right now it's pretty western-television-centric, but if you're into that at all a lot of the prompts are great. There's at least one Korrasami fic already! And, um, I may have posted a couple of prompts for The Middleman. As you do.*

*Incidentally, I have discovered that when I say 'Middleman' out loud, it comes out like this: ~MIDDLEMAN~!

I had already decided pretty clearly not to do Yuletide this year, but now my resolve is weakening. Help me! Tell me to write stories in the giant fandoms of your choice instead! Tell me to focus on my studies!

And more importantly, tell me if I can write Yuletide Treats for people if I'm not participating in Yuletide. Just in case.

I wrote music is no match for happiness (and grandness none for music), a post-canon Mekakushi no Kuni | Land of the Blindfolded fic. I'm very proud of it, weak spots and all -- it has college and music and easy friendship and happiness, all in just over a thousand words. This was one of those stories that could have been either a thousand words or a hundred thousand, and someday I think I'll write it the other way.

*cough* It's also very, very revealing of the things I like, both to write and live. I'm glad I got this fandom to write in, because while I like to think it's a good fic to read, it was also a wonderful fic to write.

(To those who haven't read Land of the Blindfolded: Do you like happy teenage slice-of-life, with lots of friendship and maybe a few magic powers (and did I mention happy)? THIS IS THE MANGA FOR YOU.)

So, Yuletide fics!

I got a ~5200-word Natsume Yuujinchou fic, Never Lag Behind, which is quite lovely. If you didn't like Nishimura and Kitano much before, you may change your mind after reading this -- they are such teenagers, oh my god. I'm making my 'n'awwww, Natsume Yuujinchou' face just thinking about it.

I also got a Gokusen fic! Make Sure He's Worth It is a crossover with Ouran. Of course Yankumi went to school there. :D I never thought I'd get a Yuletide treat -- especially not a Gokusen one. Thank you, mystery author!

If you can guess mine, I'll . . . write you something. At some point. Look, just re-link me to your Yuletide Letter/write a Yuletide-ish letter about whatever fandoms you want and I'll probably write you something even if you don't guess. (Hint, if you do: it's the one that's really really obviously written by me. Oh, and it's a fandom I signed up to get fic for.)

At some point in the future I will probably write a post called My Cousins Described Through The Lens Of Shoujo Manga, because they are the best cousins ever and I want to talk about them lots and lots in great detail except that would make me all lonely and you all bored. Also because they are actually a lot like shoujo manga character archetypes (if archetypes is the right word, I feel like there's another one I'm forgetting. Like tropes, but for characters as a whole) and I need to pin them down in words for a while.

Oh, and Azula! I am finally writing an Azula fic. Slowly. But I think I'm finally about to find out what happens to Azula in Knife and Ink; I thought she was dead for a while.

ahahaha

Y'all will be able to tell which Yuletide fic I wrote in about five seconds, I swear. Because it's written exactly the same way every >1000-word fic I've written in the past year has been. *facepalm*

At least I'm consistent?
esmenet: Little!Anthy with swords (Default)
My Yuletide assignment fills me with GLEE. It's just the sort of fic that fits this particular fandom, and I'd already been kinda-sorta planning to write one like this for myself. Slice-of-life all the way, baby. ♥

Even better, my recipient seems like someone I'd enjoy being friends with. :D

On an unrelated note: I just watched the first episode of Cybersix. The main character is a crossdressing teacher who spends her nights as a cross between Batman and Kaitou Kid. In heels.

(This needs a Magic Kaito crossover like none other, I tell ya. Oh, the team-up potential!)

And this time, actual Yuletide letter! :D

Dear Yuletide Author,

Hello! First of all, I think it's wonderful that other people love these tiny little fandoms and are willing to write fic in them. I will be immensely happy even if it's not perfect. :D

Second of all, please have a look at this post before you begin writing. I hope that you already know to treat all characters' identities, cultures, orientations, religions, and histories with respect, and to do at least a fairly good amount of research (Google is your friend!), but a well-written reminder never hurts.

I like het and slash, and a good femslash fic can make me squee for hours at a time, but my true favourites are gen and asexual relationships. Sex, as a whole, is really not my thing -- if you write me a thousand words of scorching-hot porn I will most likely end up slightly disappointed.

Things I love: characters hanging out and having fun with each other, the relationships of siblings or close friends, details of a character's hobby or profession ("they play the violin" isn't good enough; I want to know about the feel of the strings against their fingers, the moment right before a concert when they realise they forgot to cut their nails and have thirty seconds to do it in or risk having to flatten their knuckles the entire time, the one note they can never quite get right), context (cultural, social, geographic, religious, historical), quiet yet intense moments, culturally appropriate clever references or turns of phrase, stylish prose, music-making, discussion of or reference to sexuality and gender issues, cultural and religious(if applicable) references (can't say it too many times), domesticity, saving the world one mind at a time, meta, social commentary, vivid imagery, created families, and linguistics.

(Don't worry; you don't have to fit all of that in.)

And to c&p from [personal profile] fulselden 's letter: I should say upfront that if you have to make a choice between writing the story OF YOUR HEART that you really want to write and following one of the prompts I give below, I would far prefer you to write the aforementioned story OF YOUR HEART.

1. Land of the Blindfolded | Mekakushi no Kuni

Land of the Blindfolded is about a few future- and past-seeing teenagers who go to high school and hang out together. For people who can see other times with a touch, they're surprisingly ordinary; most of their long-term problems revolve around their school or family life. They don't use their powers to change the world or spy on people -- their most common usage of them is to help someone who is about to have a painful accident. Even their Tragic Pasts are pretty normal -- Arou's mother died when he was young and he still misses her, Namiki is on bad terms with his family and lives alone, with only a few adorable animals and his rough-looking-yet-kind business partner to console him outside of school hours.

I love it all. Arou's gardening, Kanae slowly finding her own way in life, Namiki's insistence that he'll come back every day and eat lunch with them when he's in college. Even the romance, over-sappy as it is sometimes. Eri and Ezawa's relationship, based on honesty instead of tact. Mekakushi no Kuni is what it is: slow-paced and gentle and positive, even when the events going on are less than happy.

Will Sou ever come to care about people other than his dead sister and Arou? Will Namiki really come eat lunch with them every day? (Of course he will.)  What's up with Arou's disappearing act? Will Kaichou ever get a real name? Does everyone stay friends after high school? (Please yes.) Will Namiki's business partner ever meet the other characters? What about Arou's friend who wanted to go into politics?

This is my happy manga, and it shows.

Availability: Nine volumes long, licensed by CMX in North America. Should be easy to find, if not cheap to buy -- I'm sure you can -- *cough* -- get hold of a copy long enough to read it all. Well worth your time.

2. Kokinwakashuu

Aka the Kokinshuu, a collection of Heian-era (mostly) tanka, commissioned for the purpose of re-popularizing an older and more native form of poetry than the Chinese form that dominated the literary scene at the time. I highly recommend you read at least some of the poems, even if you don't write anything for it -- they're absolutely beautiful. (As is the prologue. Ki no Tsurayuki, I grovel at your amazing feet. The seeds of Japanese poetry lie in the human heart and grow into leaves of ten thousand words.)

Write about the circumstances the poems were written in, or use them as prompts for stories set in the Heian era, or stories about Shinto deities (mmm, Tatsuta-hime). Anything for this fandom would be amazing.

Availability
: Laurel Rodd & Mary Henkenius' translation is pretty easy to find -- I don't know about bookstores, but my local community college has a copy, and the local university has several different translations including this one -- and has lots of useful footnotes. Failing that, a lot of the poems can be found with a little googling. [personal profile] lnhammer is translating it for fun -- here are some of Ki no Tsurayuki's, if you want to start with him.

3. Gokusen (manga)

(Quote from the picspam: Sometimes, if there are other people around that she needs to hide her badassery from, she will graciously allow him to punch out a bad guy that she's already defeated.)

Availability: Here are all fifteen volumes. Warning: may cause inability to sleep until finished.

4. Natsume Yuujinchou | Natsume's Book of Friends

A tale of a young man who gradually learns how to open his heart to others. You know, just like all the others -- except this one is actually sweet and entertaining. I love it! Even more than Mekakushi no Kuni, this is a series I want to hug to my heart and never let go.

I don't know quite how to recommend it to someone who isn't already interested in this kind of thing -- it's like the quieter bits of early xxxHOLiC, with its focus on Natsume learning how to let people close to him. And juicy moral dilemmas -- do you kill the ayakashi that's going to hurt people? Even if it's your friend? Do you let your friend the exorcist kill ayakashi?

This is another one where I basically want more of canon. I love Natsume and his slightly distant friendships, the way he's gradually starting to reach out to people instead of drawing away in politeness to protect them. What fic I've seen tends to focus on him and Tanuma and Madara/Nyanko-sensei -- but I want fic about Taki and Kitamoto and Nishimura and Hinoe-san and Touko-san and Shigure-san and Natori (I love that Natsume is sarcastic to him so often. He's usually so polite) and Reiko and everyone.

I'd love to see someone finding out about Natsume seeing ayakashi. The Fujiwaras, maybe? Kitamoto and Nishimura? Or more of Natsume hanging out with Natori/doing exorcist things himself. (Or Taki and Tanuma spending time together! I don't know if they actually have much in common other than Natsume, but for some reason I think it would be fun watching them get together and make Plans about things.)

Or just something about any of the not-Madara characters. (I don't have anything against Madara! But Natsume does have other people in his life.) Also, even though I'm a genfic girl at heart, I would not make strenuous objections to romance for this fandom. ;)

Also also also if you manage to write a good crossover between this and Land of the Blindfolded, I will love you forever.

Availability: Licensed by Viz in the US. The first two volumes are easily found in chain bookstores; the rest can be found for download here.

I was just re-reading the Mukuro arc, and . . . damn. I didn't notice it before, but Tsuna-tachi are actually really strong. It somehow doesn't feel like the typical shounen thing of new-powers-as-the-plot-demands, I think partly because it doesn't do the thing where Ichigo gets near-killed by Byakuya, trains for like a week, and then beats him -- we get sixty chapters of training disguised as light-hearted comedy, and then our main cast (some of whom were already really strong before canon started, like Hibari and Gokudera) goes up against a dangerous criminal escaped from the highest-security prison in the world. Who proceeds to make comments like "This is a first. No human has ever been able to sense, with one look, when I am possessing another," and "What a frightening man, Hibari Kyouya . . ."

IDK, it just never occurred to me before that Tsuna & co. go into their first serious fight already trained and strong, rather than kind of useless like most shounen heroes. I think I like KHR a lot more now.

Also, belated Yuletide reveal! I wrote Content for the Chrestomanci fandom. I'm kind of sad I only managed to write one thing, but considering my usual glacial pace it's not too bad. I'll probably try to write more next year.

The giftfic I got was super awesome, too! \o/ Explosions is a lovely fic about Conrad's time at Chrestomanci Castle, with lots of cameos by all the castle staff. READ IT. :D

BTW, writing for KHR is hard. I'm used to fandoms with lots of convenient, well-trod AU-diverging points and fic challenges (*cough* Severitus *cough*), and Reborn! really just doesn't have those, or at least not so many as I'm used to. Then again, this is probably just my usual inability to think of actual plot. Seriously, I start off with an idea like 'female!Tsuna/female!Gokudera yes do want' without actually thinking of anything more first and I end up just kind of rewriting canon with more boobies and UST. X.x Oh well, I'll think of something good eventually . . .

YULETIDE ASSIGNMENT. ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Seriously, I have like five plotbunnies already. I was afraid I'd get asked to write for one of the fandoms I know but am not particularly inspired for, or that I'd get stuck with 'characters: any, details: none' or something similar. But the only possible problem* is that my recipient is like 243314398 times more talented and awesome than me. :DDD

THIS IS GOING TO BE SO AWESOME.

*Well, okay, plus the fact that I have to send my computer off now for two weeks to get the speakers fixed. But that's separate.
esmenet: Little!Anthy with swords (Default)
Here it is, at long last! My Yuletide letter. :D *was totally not procrastinating* This is my first time in Yuletide, so please forgive me for any minor breaks of protocol. (Major ones, of course, are something entirely different. Feel free to beat the hell out of me for those.)

General stuff: I like happiness, tragedy, slice-of-life, friendship, and witty banter. I'll generally go for friendship more than romance, and have trouble writing things that don't end happily. Despite that, I'll read well-done angstfics over and over, because if something can make me really feel for the characters, that's all that matters. On the 'happy ending' side, I love reading things about people coming to terms with their lives, discovering that despite everything sometimes it's all okay and life doesn't suck quite that much. Also, although I adore canon-compliant backstories and such, I also love love love AUs. Feel free to make use of them as much as you wish. :) And, um . . . character bashing is bad, and I trust you to judge OOC-ness on your own.

Things you can* check out to get a better handle on my tastes: The Reader (HP fandom), Better Days (Hikaru no Go fandom), [livejournal.com profile] flakedice 's xxxHOLiC fics, gatewaygirl's R-and-under-rated fics (HP fandom), my lj memories that I recently remembered I had (mostly Katekyou Hitman Reborn), and my genfic C2 over at ffn (which is probably a better guide to my current tastes than my favourites list, since I haven't cleared the latter out in ages).

*I emphasize the 'can', though I'd recommend you do have a look at The Reader. And maybe There Without A Map too, if you're at all familiar with the Prince of Tennis fandom.
