I'm participating in au_bigbang, and have switched plots/fandoms a couple times since I started. -_- I've gotten on a roll, now, but something's stalled me. My Bleach/HP crossover is acting like it doesn't want to be a crossover -- or at least, not with Harry Potter. It feels too calm and rational, not . . . wacky enough for the Wizarding World. I really like what I've written so far, but I don't know what to do with it.

HELP ME, F-LIST, YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE.

What sort of things would a bunch of geeky scientists (and possibly sociologists, surveyors, politicians, etc) name towns, prefectures, and that -- basically place names -- on the moon and Mars? I know the US had some pretty awesome and hilarious place names, although some of those are gone now (you would not believe the amount of hills once called 'Two Tits'), so I'm looking for what you would get if you asked a bunch of geeky awesome people to name something anything they liked, be it after their favourite author, period in history, or bad joke. I am, for instance, dead set on having both a Watanabe-ville and a Byzantium.

I'M BASICALLY ASKING YOU TO GIVE ME YOUR FAVOURITE HISTORY/SCIENCE AND SCI-FI IN-JOKES (THAT COULD PLAUSIBLY BE PLACE NAMES ON MARS. AND THE MOON.) THIS CANNOT GO WRONG.

I've gotten myself into something that will probably take several years, lots of research, and plenty of dedication -- which I'm not really sure I have, but let's discuss that later. No, I haven't gotten into a college.

I've started writing a novel.

And of course I'm tearing my hair out now because this is the sort of novel that devolves into a great sprawling mass, gets split up into 321432 books, and eventually goes off the rails completely and turns into gibberish which everyone pretends never happened. HELP.

And by 'started writing' I mean 'have thought up a couple of the key characters (all 2123 billion of them) and am trying to start setting up the background'. Which I can't really do, because I really don't know enough. (Are three major powers enough? What about business conglomerates? Is 'it takes 3 days to get to Mars' really good enough details on FTL transportation?) This is the sort of story that demands politics and intrigue and well-thought-out governmental systems, the kind that I love but really know nothing about writing.

. . . Any research suggestions?
